Great Grey Owl
Watercolor 16 X 24
©Jean Bidwell – “Great Grey Owl”
I have bore witness to the Majestic “Great Grey” only once, high above me in a tree alongside a sullen riverbed in Dead Horse Gultch, Arizona. He absolutely took my breath away. This particular piece was a true struggle as I tried over and over and over again (with the same piece of 120lb. paper) to re-work the color. I soaked it, I scrubbed it, I did everything except take a razor blade (side-long) to it, to remove the offending pigment. At my wits end, determined to destroy the image (and never revisit the subject…as is my practice when a painting says “no,” or to “stop”) a friend knocked at my door and challenged me to finish it in spite of my obvious frustration. The original work now resides in a prominent place in her home, of course!
