©Jean Bidwell – “Metridium Field”
Metridium, simply put, are one of the more “elegant” of Sea Anemones. Their feeding and defense processes being no different nor notable than any other’s, however, to come across a “field” of these gently swaying, stately, plumbed anemones cannot help but slow ones dive to a standstill. Once disturbed by a perceived threat, they recoil back into themselves, leaving the “field” not unlike an “underwater dust bowl,” only to ever-so-cautiously, return to “full bloom” once again…in their feeding.
